The Basic Requirements – 2 Day Travel Health Course

Download or Print Course Brochure

This 2 day course is designed for any health professionals who are involved or interested in the provision of travel health advice and travel vaccine administration.

The Basic Requirements which is aimed at those that are new to travel medicine, has been benchmarked against and adheres to the course content recommended in the Faculty of Travel Medicine Good Practice Guidance for Providing a Travel Health Service.

On most courses we have participants from various fields of health care – practice and treatment room nurses,  pharmacists, occupational health nurses, school nurses, medics and GPs. This course is ideal for those who are new to the field of travel medicine, but is also popular with anyone wishing to update and expand their current knowledge.

Our policy is to keep the course numbers to a maximum of 25 which allows for a relaxed and interactive atmosphere and the opportunity to ask plenty of questions.

TREC courses are organised by Clare Henderson and other guest lecturers, who all have experience and further qualifications in the field of travel medicine.

The topics covered will include:–

  • Risk assessment
  • Principles of immunisation*
  • British schedule vaccines*
  • Travel vaccines*
  • Sources of information
  • Travel health resources
  • Food and water borne disease
  • Malaria

*Please note that this course is specific to travel health and does not include foundation immunisation or anaphylaxis training.

Whilst this course can provide the theoretical knowledge we cannot certify practitioners as being competent to provide unsupervised pre-travel consultations.  As cited in the Good Practice Guidance for Providing a Travel Health Service, theoretical training should be coupled with work-based learning, including supervised practice which is essential for practitioners new to travel medicine to develop their clinical skills. To facilitate work-based learning and to support governance arrangements within workplaces, a competency assessment tool is included within the Good Practice Document.
